Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) selects BMW Group DesignworksUSA to create it’s “Fleet of the Future”

New Design for BART trains are hoped to enhance the quality of future public transit.

BMW Group DesignworksUSA announces its plans to start an ambitious urban transit project in collaboration with BART, the Bay Area’s regional transit provider. Together, DesignworksUSA and BART will create the “Fleet of the Future,” which includes a new generation of train cars that will enter service by 2017 and deliver premium ridership experience for its passengers.

The “Fleet of the Future” includes train cars’ exterior which will convey a style and shape with unique signature expression to the exterior passenger information system. Inside the new cars, DesignworksUSA will create the main interior design feature of the new train cars, and incorporate the controls in the design of the trains operators’ cab.

BMW Group DesignworksUSA is a global design consultancy and subsidiary of the BMW Group. The company, which was acquired by the BMW Group in 1995, today operates globally from its locations in Europe, America and Asia transferring knowledge from their work for the automotive area to clients from the most diverse industries and vice versa.

BART began picking up passengers in September 1973 and is presently operating the oldest fleet of train cars in the USA. The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District is the 5th largest all-rail train system in the USA.   Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) trains serve the residents of four counties and the 26 cities that surround its 44 stations.  Every weekday about 350,000 customers ride BART, which operates the oldest fleet of train cars in the USA.  Some 40 years later, most of that original fleet of train cars is still in operation today, only now they carry the grandchildren of those first fare-paying customers.  BART’s number one focus is to replace the aging and deteriorating fleet of train cars with the Fleet of the Future.”

New BMW I8 and 6 Series Convertible in Mission Impossible 4

 

Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible are back and this time, the supercars featured in the popular film come from BMW. The 2014 BMW i8 as well as the new 6 Series Convertible are said to both have big roles in the upcoming film.

Mission Impossible 4: The Ghost Protocol will include some exciting car chases that will feature the New Redesigned 6 Series Convertible and the debut of the BMW i8.

Developed under the Project i umbrella, the BMW i8 will begin production at the end of 2013 and deliveries beginning early in 2014. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics, now officially called the BMW i8 is expected to be powered by a 328-horsepower three-cylinder diesel-hybrid powertrain. The lightweight production car is said to go to 0-100 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds! And tops out at 155 miles per hour!

And during normal driving, this supercar is estimated to get 62.5 miles per gallon. But it’s safe to assume that in the film Mission Impossible 4: The Ghost Protocol it will not undergo “normal driving”.

When we’ll see a production version of the i8 in showrooms is still unclear, though some reports claim that it will appear at a price north of $160,000.
